6.1.6 Gen. 16: Hagar and Ishmael
It is part of the realism and honesty of the Bible that it does not conceal the dark sides even of its great models of faith. In the rivalry between Sarah and Hagar, the first shadow falls on the otherwise light-filled story of Abraham. Similarly, this theme is taken up again in the even more dramatic version of the rivalry between Ishmael and Isaac Gen. 21.
