6.1.15 Gen. 25: Abraham’s Death
After the courtship of Isaac, described with oriental detail and clear narrative joy, Abraham’s mission is now fulfilled. Very briefly, as it were under a distant second, are now dealt with one after the other:
- Abraham’s second marriage including family tree
- Abraham’s death and burial
- Ishmael and his family tree
- Birth of Esau and Jacob and finally the
- Sale of the birthright for a dish of lentils.
According to vRad, there is an unusual self-irony in the folk etymological explanation of the name Jacob יעקב from the word for heel עקב (‘kb) in 25:26. יעקב probably means “God may protect.”
