2.1.2 Trust in God

Trust is a vital part of our relationship with God and is the foundation on which all else rests.

Trust implies a belief in, and reliance upon, something, to have conscious trust because of good reasons – past experiences, definite evidence, and follow through. Without trust a relationship will not last, whether it is a human one or one with God … trust goes hand in hand with commitment and It is only after you feel you can trust that you are able to truly commit.

In order to have faith in a person we must believe in the trustworthiness of that person.  Faith is determined more by the object of that faith (the one believed in) than its subject (the one who believes). As Christians, the entire understanding of faith is shaped by the One we believe in – God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Creator of the universe and Saviour of humanity.

Faith is only possible and meaningful because God is ‘trustworthy’. One of the key words the Bible repeatedly uses when referring to God is that He is ‘faithful’… and the faith of each person is only possible because God is first faithful in His actions and words to the Covenant He has made with human beings.   He is always all-powerful, good, merciful and loving, and we find this view repeated in the New Testament: God is omnipotent Love.  If God was not faithful then faith would dwindle and die.  Faith is not ‘our’ contribution to a Christian life, it is the true response that we give in response to a faithful, loving God who reveals himself to us and fills our hearts with his grace, so that we are able to respond with the grace that He first gives to us.
